Understanding Your Electricity Bill in Pakistan — Complete Breakdown
Learn how to read and understand every section of your Pakistani electricity bill. Covers units, slabs, FPA, taxes, surcharges and more.
Your Pakistani electricity bill contains a wealth of information — but understanding all the numbers, charges, and abbreviations can feel overwhelming. In this guide, we break down every section of a typical DISCO bill so you can understand exactly what you are paying for and why.
Consumer Information Section
The top of your bill shows your consumer details: name, address, reference number, meter number, tariff category, and connection load. Your reference number (10–14 digits) is the key identifier for checking bills online. The tariff category (domestic, commercial, industrial) determines your rate structure.
Units Consumed and Meter Reading
This section shows your current and previous meter readings. The difference between the two is your 'units consumed' (measured in kWh). One unit equals one kilowatt-hour — the energy consumed by a 1000-watt appliance running for one hour. If you have a 100W fan running 10 hours, that is 1 unit.
Peak and off-peak readings may appear separately if you have a Time-of-Use (TOU) meter. Peak hours generally carry higher rates.
Tariff Slabs and Charges
Pakistan uses a progressive slab-based tariff system for domestic consumers. The more units you consume, the higher the per-unit rate. For example, units from 1–100 are charged at a lower rate than units from 301–700. This encourages conservation — heavy users pay disproportionately more per unit.
The exact slab rates are determined by NEPRA and updated periodically. Your bill may show the breakdown of charges across different slabs depending on your total consumption.
FPA, Taxes, and Surcharges
Beyond the basic unit charges, your bill includes several additional components: FPA (Fuel Price Adjustment), GST (General Sales Tax), Electricity Duty, PTV Fee, NJ Surcharge, FC Surcharge, and possibly others. These government-mandated charges can add 15–30% to your base bill amount.
FPA fluctuates monthly based on fuel costs, while taxes are typically percentage-based. Understanding these components helps explain why your bill varies even with consistent usage.
Due Date and Late Payment Surcharge
Every bill has a due date and a 'last date' after which a late payment surcharge (LPS) applies. Paying after the due date typically adds a percentage-based penalty to your bill. Always check the due date on your duplicate bill and pay before it to avoid unnecessary charges.
